An inheritance need not be money.
It may be a maxim, a habit, or a debt one man leaves in the keeping of another.
Long before Ebenezer Scrooge learned to keep Christmas, Jacob Marley taught him how to count the world.
Marley lived by a simple arithmetic: you either add to the world, or you subtract. He built his life upon order, discipline, and the conviction that mercy made poor business. Then death opened a ledger he could neither close nor dispute.
Summoned before an implacable Auditor, Marley must account not only for the suffering he caused, but for the creed he placed in the hands of the one man who trusted him. The past reveals what hardened him. The present counts what his rules have cost. The future shows how far a single lesson may travel.
His account is closed. Scrooge's is not.
A Christmas Carol: Marley is a dark and compassionate companion to Charles Dickens's beloved tale, a story of friendship, consequence, and the inheritance one life leaves within another.
