Audiophile Tube Amplifiers with the ECC99

"Tube amplifiers conjure an excellent sound but are heavy and expensive." This is the image of tube amplifiers. Based on the knowledge that the good sound of a tube amplifier is independent of its output power and that the actual power requirement in the living room is rather small, simple and cost-efficient amplifier circuits are the result.

The ECC99 tube from JJ is perfectly suited for this task: due to its comparatively high-power dissipation and simultaneously low internal resistance, it can be used in both power amplifiers and preamplifiers.
In this book, this tube is used to describe the construction of the following stereo amplifiers:
- a parallel-push-pull amplifier with an output power of 11 watts
- a parallel single-ended amplifier with an output power of 4 watts
- a single-ended amplifier for 120 EUR. Is that possible?

The ECC99 is used as a preamp tube in the following circuits:
- a phono equalizer preamp for MM cartridge
- a headphone amplifier (hybrid)
- a tube sound converter

The book describes the detailed construction of the electronics on grid boards and soldering strips, matching the electrical circuits. There are no boards to be etched. Furthermore, the installation of the electronics in a suitable case and the hum-free design of the grounding are described.

Audio amplifiers can be measured very precisely with a sound card; it represents a two-channel oscilloscope with an integrated signal generator. Using the example of an external USB sound card the potential but also the limits of this measuring method are shown.
