Becoming the Hammer: The First 23 tells the story of Luis G. Celeste's first twenty-three years-years that shaped him, broke him, rebuilt him, and taught him how to survive with almost nothing. Celeste was not born into comfort. He grew up without safety nets, privilege, or second chances, raised as an immigrant kid in the Bronx in a city that offered no guarantees. Nothing in his life was handed to him. Everything he became was forged through struggle, hunger, and the belief that he could be more than where he started.

About the Author
Luis G. Celeste has valued community for as long as he can remember. His early involvement in the Explorers program introduced him to service through hands-on work-repainting graffiti-covered walls, serving holiday meals, visiting hospice patients, and supporting families through toy and clothing drives. Giving his time taught him lessons about people that no classroom ever could.
Connection is central to his life. Whether sharing a meal with friends, spending time at the gym or a park, watching a movie, or engaging in meaningful conversations, he believes people are what make life meaningful. To him, family extends beyond blood-it is built through loyalty, responsibility, and showing up for one another, especially in difficult times.
Professionally, Celeste's path has taken him from working at a local Taco Bell to serving in the Army National Guard and later as a New York City Police Officer. Each role shaped his understanding of struggle, discipline, and service, reinforcing a belief that respect is earned through hard work and that true service means putting others first.
