Betrayal of the Badge chronicles Pacheco's journey through the high-stakes world of law enforcement, civil service, and security operations. This memoir explores themes of resilience, institutional corruption, personal integrity, and systemic betrayal.
Growing up in Queens, New York, Pacheco was shaped by childhood adversity, early flight training, and nearly 14 years with Northwest Airlines at JFK International Airport. Facing sudden layoffs in 1992, he transitioned into public service, working as a U.S. Postal Carrier, Nassau County Park Ranger, armored car guard in the Bronx, and confidential informant for U.S. Customs.
Driven by a desire for purpose and service, Pacheco earned his way into federal law enforcement as a U.S. Immigration Officer with the INS, serving at Krome Detention Center and the Expedited Removal Unit at Miami International Airport. He later transitioned to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Police in Fort Worth, Texas, protecting top-secret military assets. Assigned to Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn as a DOD Police Sergeant, Pacheco served on the front lines during the aftermath of September 11, 2001, taking immediate command and securing critical assets.
In the heightened threat environment following 9/11, a station-generated firearm authorization and an expired state permit led to his arrest by local New York authorities. Despite his federal status under Titles 5, 10, and 18 of the U.S. Code, Pacheco was ensnared in bureaucratic infighting, taking a misdemeanor plea that severely impacted his career trajectory.
Betrayal of the Badge showcases the heart-wrenching story of the struggle to rebuild a life while fighting post-conviction hurdles, relocating, workplace politics, and systemic overreach.
