"C'est pour saisir la nuit de Paris que je suis devenu photographe." L'oeuvre de Brassaï trouve sa source dans le Paris nocturne des années trente. C'est au contact de la réalité de la rue et des lieux de plaisir, lors de ses marches en compagnie d'écrivains et amis, Henry Miller ou Léon-Paul Fargue, comme lui amoureux de Paris, que Brassaï apprend à voir et à photographier la ville. À ce Paris nocturne, qu'il fut le premier à photographier de manière aussi assidue, Brassaï consacra trois ouvrages, d'approche très différente : Paris de Nuit (1932), où éclatent la beauté muette des lieux et l'inquiétante étrangeté de la vision nocturne, Voluptés de Paris (1935), publication un peu leste, réalisée malgré lui, et qu'il n'a jamais revendiquée, et Le Paris secret des années 30 (1976), au contenu social plus marqué, où le photographe se fait aussi conteur. Reprenant l'essentiel des images publiées dans ces ouvrages et en en proposant d'autres, pour certaines inédites, cette publication est la première à analyser, en la replaçant dans le contexte de l'époque, la singularité de cette vision de Brassaï : entre reportage, documentaire social et recherche poétique, c'est bien son Paris nocturne des années de l'entre-deux-guerres qui lui assure une place majeure dans l'histoire de la photographie du XXᵉ siècle.
