The narrative starts with a recent return visit to Mato Grosso do Sul, where Bruce spent some of his time as a cowboy, forty years previously. The exciting period of the author's life is vividly re-experienced as he shares with the reader what it was like to leave Britain as a young man and plunge into the exciting life of a cowboy in upcountry Brazil. The author skillfully mixes humor, compassion as well as tragedy in this very personal story.
