At 11:52 on the night of the ice storm, Lacey Dunmore whispers to a 911 dispatcher that a man is on her porch. He says he is checking on everybody after the storm, and he knows her name. She hides her four-year-old daughter in the closet with the phone. Then the line goes dead.
Lieutenant Hollis Carrow came home to the north Georgia mountains to hold her family's orchard together after her father's stroke. Now she is pulling files from other winters, other outages, and other women who died alone in the dark while nobody thought to ask why.
With coroner Jonah Pruitt willing to look again, Hollis has until the next storm to find a man who knows exactly when the county goes dark. More ice is already crossing the state line, and her fifteen-year-old brother will be home when the power fails.
For readers of Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot.
