Du peintre Jacques-Émile Blanche on connaît surtout son fameux portrait de Proust. Né en 1861, influencé par Monet, Manet et Corot, il deviendra le portraitiste de la société littéraire, artistique, mondaine de la Belle Époque et de l'entre-deux-guerres. Mais il fut aussi écrivain et auteur d'une trentaine de livres (critiques d'art, romans, souvenirs...). Dans son atelier se croisent Fantin-Latour, Valéry, Mallarmé, Morand, Claudel, Anna de Noailles, la princesse Bibesco, Ravel... Ami de Cocteau, Blanche deviendra son correspondant privilégié. Leur correspondance couvre la période 1912-1939 et comprend soixante-quinze lettres de Cocteau et trente et une de Blanche, toutes inédites. La première partie relate leurs voyages, leur vie mondaine et leurs projets. Cocteau sollicite alors les conseils du "maître". Survient la Première Guerre mondiale, Cocteau s'engage comme ambulancier et parle de son expérience du front. À la fin de la guerre, les deux amis peuvent se consacrer plus amplement à leur travail, mais n'oublient pas d'évoquer dans leurs lettres les scandales politiques et la vie artistique de Montparnasse. Enfin, les dernières lettres reflètent une douloureuse expérience : Cocteau vient de perdre son ami Raymond Radiguet. Blanche est le seul à qui il ose encore se confier. Cette correspondance croisée offre de multiples considérations sur le travail et la vie de ces deux peintres-écrivains d'exception.
