Carlito Nunez has spent his entire life being called pretty.

He was a pretty baby, a pretty child, and by high school, the kind of young man people noticed the moment he entered a room. At twenty-two, Carlito is striking, confident, openly gay, and surrounded by a fiercely protective Puerto Rican family that has never allowed him to believe he should be ashamed of who he is.

Detective Third Grade John "Knuckles" Brennan is everything Carlito is not.

Brennan is a hard-drinking, violent, openly homophobic NYPD detective with a reputation for clearing cases and leaving damage behind him. He has ignored sensitivity training, insulted coworkers, crossed lines, and survived complaints because he gets results. When Carlito is assaulted after walking in on three burglars inside his apartment, Brennan's coworkers think it will be funny to assign the case to the precinct's loudest homophobe.

The joke changes everything.

Brennan initially wants nothing to do with Carlito, but the investigation refuses to let either man walk away. As Brennan hunts the three men who attacked him, contempt begins turning into fascination, fascination into desire, and desire into something Brennan cannot accept without destroying the identity he has spent a lifetime defending.

Carlito sees another man beneath the brutality. A lonely one. A frightened one. A man capable of tenderness when no one else is watching.

For a while, that is enough.

Then love becomes secrecy.

Secrecy becomes jealousy.

Jealousy becomes control.

And when the three men who assaulted Carlito begin dying in a series of mysterious accidents, Carlito starts wondering how far Brennan has already gone in the name of protecting him.

By the time Carlito finally understands that affection cannot cure abuse, he knows he has to leave. He begins seeing David Webber, a successful investment banker who offers him something Brennan never could: a relationship that does not have to hide.

Brennan cannot accept it.

One Friday night, he walks into Beef Eaters, the gay bar where Carlito is spending the evening with David.

He is armed.

He is jealous.

And he has already convinced himself that losing Carlito is worse than anything he is about to do.

What follows leaves six people dead, five wounded, and an NYPD detective squad forced to confront a terrible truth: the relationship that ended in blood began with a joke they thought was harmless.

Cries Within the Closet is a dark LGBTQIA psychological crime drama inspired by true events, exploring internalized homophobia, toxic masculinity, domestic abuse, obsession, police culture, identity, and the deadly consequences of confusing love with possession.

Some closets protect secrets. Others become tombs.
