"Deaf transitions" explores deaf people's individual ways of being in the family and community context. It examines how deaf people's experiences of family and community relationships, from birth to adulthood, come to construct their meaning of 'family', 'community' and 'identity'. It illuminates the life transitions that deaf people make in their search for this meaning within and beyond the deaf world. A celebration of difference, it paints a picture of deaf people which defies the stereotypes of the collective unconscious. A companion volume to "Counselling - The death challenge", this book contains a wealth of original writing from deaf people themselves. "Deaf transitions" will be of interest and value to all whose who aspire to be counsellors or therapists or who are working with deaf people in health, education and social services.
