Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat

Tomorrow the Kotwal hangs. Tonight he tells you why.

He was the most feared lawman in town and the gentlest master in his haveli. He loved his wife. He loved his animals. Most of all he loved Pluto, a big black cat as clever as a man.

Then came the drink. A knife in the dark. A rope on a dead banyan. A fire that left one strange shape burned into the only wall still standing. And then a second cat finds him in a tavern. It has lost an eye too. And the white mark on its chest is changing shape.

Edgar Allan Poe's darkest confession, moved to a 19th-century North Indian haveli and told in shadow and candlelight, with the narration retold in clear modern English.
