De nombreux illustrateurs, confrontés aux fables de La Fontaine, se servirent des animaux pour tenter de décrire le monde des humains, comme les y invitait ce dernier. J.J. Grandville (1803-1847), plus traqué par les doutes et les questionnements - il mourut fou -, se livra à une démarche tout opposée quand il dessina les images qui accompagnaient les fables. Refusant d'humaniser les animaux, au contraire il s'est attaché à retrouver dans l'humanité, que mettait en scène La Fontaine, les traits animaliers que celle-ci recèle lorsque ses protagonistes se retrouvent en société, donnant un caractère complètement nouveau et visionnaire à ses illustrations. Pour mieux en rendre les détails et l'ensemble, ces gravures ont été imprimées en coloris d'époque, révélant l'importance et la place singulière qu'occupe le travail de Grandville. Ici, sous des couleurs nouvelles et inédites, corbeau et renard, tortue et lièvre, loup et agneau, souris et chat viennent nous révéler les différentes facettes des êtres humains.
