George Fox & the Quakers

George Fox first gathered Friends more than three centuries ago by 'opening them to the way'; for our time also, his life has become part of his message. He took on the religious and political establishments of his day in the name of a purer Christianity and a juster social system. This led to a remarkably strenuous, varied and dangerous career. The story of Fox and the Quakers, arch-protestors in an age of protest 350 years ago, still deserves attention today.
Though Fox's own Journal tells his own life-story fully and vividly, some readers find it so detailed, and so quick to assume his reader's familiarity with situations, events and outlooks of his time that it is difficult to read or grasp it as a whole.
Cecil Sharman's illuminating account provides vital historical context, bringing out Fox's warmth of personality and his intense sense of mission.
