L'immagine cupa della Germania anni Venti deriva in gran parte dal lavoro del berlinese George Grosz (1893-1959). Pittore, disegnatore e insegnante si forma negli anni Dieci del Novecento secondo i modelli, allora in voga, di matrice futurista e cubista. Aderisce poi all'espressionismo che si diffonde in Germania in seguito al disastro della prima guerra mondiale. Le sue opere presentano uno stile duro, violento, con figure rigide e scomposte come burattini, le sue ambientazioni urbane sono popolate di relitti umani e tronfi uomini di potere, ogni sua opera manifesta una critica senza remissione della società del suo tempo. Con gli anni Trenta e l'avvento al potere del regime nazista la sua opera è classificata tra le manifestazioni artistiche ritenute “degenerate” e nel 1933 Grosz si rifugia negli Stati Uniti, per rientrare a Berlino solo nel 1958.
