Discover the remarkable life of Grover Cleveland...
Grover Cleveland served as the 22nd and 24th president of the United States. That alone gives him a lot of clout. But his story goes deeper than the two non-consecutive terms he served in office. Cleveland was the son of a preacher who instilled in him a strong work ethic. In fact, his father kept up such a punishing pace throughout his career that he wore himself down completely and died just weeks into what was supposed to be an easier, less demanding post.
Grover Cleveland likewise worked hard throughout his life, but unlike his dear old father, he also played hard. His penchant for playing around at pubs and with women at boarding houses would come back to haunt him during his presidential campaign and nearly cost him everything. He would eventually settle down, though, by marrying Frances Folsom during his first term in office. At 21, she became the youngest first lady in American history, and their wedding is the only one ever held in the White House by a sitting president. Yet even that wasn't without its controversies, given that Cleveland had known her since she was a baby and was nearly three decades her senior. His time in office had its own share of drama, too, from a bruising fight with his own party over the nation's money to a secret cancer surgery performed aboard a friend's yacht.
This book takes a look at the life and career of Grover Cleveland in full.
