This volume is designed to provide basic background and facilitate the continued development of clinical skills for the student and experienced professional. It is organized around typical clinical problems, not theoretical, biochemical or pharmacological structures. New medications have been introduced since 1970. Of primary importance was the introduction of lithium, a drug useful both for the initial control of manic symptoms and for prevention of manic and depressive episodes. Of equal interest has been the application of psychopharmacological agents to a variety of unexpected condition. Antidepressants are now used for phobias and panic attacks. Lithium has application in the treatment of violence. Other examples abound.
