Currently, most developing countries around the world are experiencing rapid urbanization, and this trend has continued to expand over the past two decades. Rapid urbanization implies higher population density than in rural areas. However, this only means a rapid concentration of people, without a corresponding improvement in living environments. Consequently, a series of complex problems has emerged-challenges of a magnitude never before seen in human history. A considerable number of urban residents lack access to safe environmental management services and breathe polluted air.
