Con Napoleone Bonaparte e le sue "conquiste artistiche" il Louvre, ribattezzato Musée Napoléon dal direttore Dominique-Vivant Denon, divenne di fatto la prima galleria d'Europa che oggi ben conosciamo. Fu proprio nella Campagna d'Italia che Bonaparte inserě, per la prima volta, la consegna dei capolavori dell'arte fra le clausole dei trattati di pace con i sovrani sconfitti. La politica di confisca dei tesori artistici ai Paesi conquistati, perpetrata in maniera arbitraria giŕ dal Direttorio di Parigi, fu cosě "legalizzata" da Generale. Non mancarono le voci di protesta di molti intellettuali ed estimatori del patrimonio italiano: primo fra tutti, Quatrčmere de Quincy, le cui "Lettere a Miranda" raccolsero gli elementi a difesa dell'integritŕ dei capolavori che, tolti dal loro ambiente naturale, avrebbero rischiato di perdere il loro valore originale. Con il supporto di documenti e immagini, il libro ricostruisce le vicende che, negli "anni francesi", videro la Toscana granducale protagonista di una delle piů note operazioni di rastrellamento e spostamento di opere d'arte della storia contemporanea.
