A historical crime novel, inspired by true events.
Long Beach, California. July of 1978.
This part is all true. It would be the last year for crowds to scream on the thrill rides of the amusement zone known as The Pike, once upon a time described as the Coney Island of the West. Dominick Brooklier and the Los Angeles family of the mafia are scrambling as Jimmy Fratianno, one time acting head of the family, entered into Witness Protection in preparation to bring their chapter in history to an end. The FBI, flexing their new RICO authority, was trying to exploit the information gained in the "near miss" of operation UNIRAC (short for "Union Racketeering"), leading the to feds diligently explore every option they could in a frantic bid to connect the mafia to the Teamsters before Fratianno hit the stand.
Sheen McGinty is a union business agent with a complicated past, who becomes embroiled in a dangerous web of organized crime, law enforcement intrigue, and gang violence. Throughout the course of a chaotic, roughly 24-hour period, beginning as the sun sets on July 14, 1978, in Long Beach, California. Framed for murder, Sheen struggles to stay alive and out of jail, while stumbling blindly through a mine field of labor union politics, Mafia influence, street gang dynamics, and undercover operations in a time where everything seemed to irrevocably change, while also managing to stay exactly the same.
