La colline inspirée, de Maurice Barrès, paraît en 1913.Le roman s'inspire de faits réels de la vie des frères Baillard, trois lorrains qui au milieu du 19ème siècle seront à l'origine d'un important mouvement de résurgence religieuse autour de la colline de Sion-Vaudémont, en Lorraine. L'endroit, connu pour être l'un des grands lieux de piété lorrains, perdait progressivement de sa superbe jusqu'à l'arrivée des frères Baillard. Sur place, ils fondent une économie, des écoles, un pensionnat et redonnent vie à la colline. Mais bientôt, des doutes et des problèmes vont apparaître. Les frères Baillard prennent des libertés avec la religion et nouent des relations ambiguës avec un certain Eugène Vintras, un hérésiarque normand à la vie trouble qui déclare être la réincarnation du prophète Élie.Ce roman, publié en 1913 décrit l'affrontement de deux mouvements religieux : le courant illuminé des "vintrasiens" et le courant plus traditionnel des fidèles à Rome. le premier, tenant sa raison d'être de la colline de Sion en terre lorraine, symbolise la liberté ainsi que la fidélité aux "racines". le second, tenant sa raison d'être de Rome et de l'évêque de Nancy, symbolise l'ordre et la soumission à l'autorité.Le Grand prix des meilleurs romans du demi-siècle classe La colline inspirée parmi les douze meilleurs romans publiés entre 1900 et 1950.
