Describe la renovación jurídica e institucional que se llevó a cabo, el impacto del terrorismo y la violencia durante la Transición, incluida la del 23-F. Presenta, además, un análisis del complejo mundo de la educación, sus actores, aspiraciones y conflictos, así como de la evolución de las identidades colectivas en la España autonómica y del nacionalismo. Apoyándose en documentos nada o poco conocidos, Juan Antonio Ortega Díaz-Ambrona expone el proyecto centrista sin autocomplacencias ni autoflagelaciones, y relata una historia, de base autobiográfica, sobre los éxitos y fracasos de UCD, cuyo legado cree positivo y respetable para las nuevas generaciones.
