Quella del fabbro ferraio è una grande tradizione artigianale. Il volume illustra il tema delle cancellate romane setteottocentesche, fra le quali emergono i monumentali sistemi di chiusura e protezione dei portici delle basiliche urbane (Santa Maria Maggiore, San Giovanni in Laterano o Santa Croce in Gerusalemme) nel XVIII secolo, e quelli collocati a ridosso delle facciate delle chiese o nei grandi parchi cittadini, nel XIX secolo. La parte grafica del volume è molto consistente e raccoglie i disegni, d’insieme e di dettaglio, di cancelli e cancellate romane relativi al periodo in esame, esteso fino alla prima metà del Novecento. Disegni di progetto e, in molti casi, di rilievo appositamente eseguiti. Non si tratta di un repertorio esaustivo delle cancellate romane (se ne prendono in esame 150), ma il tema viene inquadrato con una selezione di casi rilevanti. Vengono messi in evidenza le origini, gli sviluppi, i rapporti con altri Paesi (Francia e Inghilterra in primo luogo) le novità tecniche e produttive, fino a quelle legate alla nascente industria del ferro, dell’acciaio e della ghisa (tra la seconda metà dell’Ottocento e la prima metà del Novecento, quando la produzione dei ‘ferrari’ romani si modifica radicalmente).
