Le Drame de la rue de la Paix, d’Adolphe Belot (1866) est un roman policier aujourd’hui méconnu, alors qu’il devrait figurer parmi les classiques indispensables du genre. Ecrit au moment même, et en réaction à la parution de L’Affaire Lerouge, d’Emile Gaboriau dans Le Soleil (1866) et avant le cycle de Lecoq, il se propose comme un défi à faire mieux. Et Belot parvient à « faire mieux » que Gaboriau, sur le plan d’une intrigue policière dont la structure est encore à inventer. C’est ce qui est passionnant à observer dans la lecture de ce roman, qui sera une découverte pour beaucoup, et dont l’histoire éditoriale sera éclairée dans un dossier final. En effet, le roman de Belot a rencontré un succès inouï, en reproduction dans la presse, en traductions, et aussi au théâtre, mais pas du tout en librairie, ce qui explique son occultation ultérieure, devenant « invisible ». Cette situation mérite d’être corrigée par une telle réédition. Pour la bonne compréhension de l’histoire du roman policier en France et sa diffusion, il est nécessaire de reconstituer les étapes de sa constitution comme genre autonome dans le cadre du roman-feuilleton et de n’omettre aucune étape créative.
