Un groupe d’amis, rentrant au Nigeria après des études universitaires en Occident, commencent leurs carrières dans le contexte difficile d’une indépendance toute récente. Wole Soyinka avait pronostiqué dans sa pièce La Danse des forêts (1960) que cette indépendance risquait d’être sombre. Il confirme cette perspective dans Les Interprètes, publié en 1965. On trouve dans ce roman les diverses nuances du rire et du sourire que Soyinka le dramaturge déploie dans ses pièces satiriques pour se moquer de l’acculturation, de la corruption, de la dictature, de l’idéologie, de la superstition. Que ce soit sur le mode ludique ou sur le mode introspectif, la vision du monde de Wole Soyinka imprègne l’atmosphère des Interprètes, que l'on retrouvera sur le mode politique dans son deuxième roman publié en 1973 et dans son nouveau roman, écrit presque cinq décennies plus tard, à la fois thriller et satire politique.
