Moral wrongdoing and our responses to it are an unavoidable part of everyday life. We all do wrong, breaking rules and neglecting responsibilities we ought to meet. And we all judge others-we feel irritation, disappointment, and outrage when people do wrong. Sometimes we voice our judgments, but often we keep them to ourselves. In this book, Espen Gamlund begins from a simple but pressing question: When are we justified in minding other people's business by criticizing their moral failures?A familiar view today urges us to mind our own business. In part, this reflects the rise of relativism, which encourages the idea that morality is a private matter—something each person defines for themselves. As moral judgments are seen as expressions of personal preference rather than shared standards, criticism of others' moral choices is increasingly thought of as inappropriate. No one, it seems, has privileged insight into what is right or wrong, nor the authority to judge others or tell them how to live. The result is a culture of restraint, where tolerance is prized and moral criticism discouraged. Yet this reluctance to mind others' business comes at a cost—it can foster indifference and lead to moral stagnation. Minding Other People's Business challenges that view. Gamlund argues that we do have a right to judge others' actions and to engage in moral criticism. Drawing on examples from everyday life, the book explores when such criticism is justified, how it can be done well, and which virtues and vices shape the practice. At its best, moral criticism is neither intrusive nor self-righteous, but thoughtful and constructive—helping us live together more responsibly in a world marked by disagreement and conflict.
