La colite ulcerosa (UC) e il morbo di Crohn sono le due forme di malattie infiammatorie intestinali che causano un'alterazione della normale funzione del colon, con conseguente deficit di assorbimento e motilità. Dal punto di vista immunologico, l'UC è associata a risposte anomale, tra cui un aumento della produzione di citochine, in particolare dell'IL-6. Sono state prese in considerazione molte strategie per il trattamento della CU, ma poche hanno mostrato risposte benefiche. I probiotici Lactobacillus acidophilus si sono dimostrati immunomodulatori per l'immunità intestinale. Oltre all'immunità, L. acidophilus esercita effetti benefici sull'omeostasi gastrointestinale e sulla guarigione. I risultati del presente lavoro hanno dimostrato che L. acidophilus è efficace nel modulare il rilascio anomalo di citochine (leptina e IL-6), indicando la validità di L. acidophilus nella prevenzione della prognosi cronica della colite nell'induzione del cancro.
