La leucemia, un tumore del sangue o del midollo osseo, è il settimo tumore più comune nelle persone di tutte le età, con la più alta incidenza tra i bambini di 14 anni o meno. Negli Stati Uniti, nel 2013 sono stati segnalati circa 48.610 nuovi casi di leucemia con 23.620 decessi. Tra questi decessi c'erano anche dei bambini, che rappresentavano il 30% dei casi. ZERUMBONE, il composto naturale principale nel rizoma dello Zingiber Zerumbet, ha una scarsa solubilità in acqua. Abbiamo creato un vettore lipidico nanostrutturato con ZERUMBONE usando una tecnica di omogeneizzazione ad alta pressione. Lo ZERUMBONE-NLC ha dimostrato di avere proprietà antitumorali ed è particolarmente efficace nel trattamento di una linea cellulare di leucemia linfoblastica umana. Le analisi fisico-chimiche e di stabilità hanno mostrato che lo ZERUMBONE-NLC ha tutte le caratteristiche di un ottimo sistema di somministrazione per lo ZERUMBONE. Anche se ZERUMBONE-NLC ha mostrato proprietà antileucemiche in vitro, il suo effetto in vivo era incerto.
