De la Corse, dont l'identité pesa si lourd dans sa formation, jusqu'à Sainte-Hélène où s'élabora la légende, l'itinéraire de Napoléon épouse une idée : comment le génie d'un homme féconde une histoire collective écartelée entre la passion de la liberté et les exigences de l'ordre, entre une tradition séculaire et l'horizon indéfini du progrès ouvert par la Révolution. Cette biographie de Napoléon raconte le destin sans précédent d'un homme inattendu prenant la tête de forces nouvelles, tout en éclairant, par des œuvres et des témoignages contemporains, l'intensité d'une trajectoire qui, sitôt la chute du héros, vint nourrir un extraordinaire imaginaire national. Luigi Mascilli Migliorini enseigne à l'université " L'Orientale " de Naples. Il dirige la Rivista italiana di studi napoleonici. Cette biographie a reçu en 2002 le grand prix pour un ouvrage non francophone de la Fondation Napoléon.
