No One Came but the Ravens

Eight-year-old Crowley has one rule to follow:

Don't open the door for nobody. Not even the mailman.

Then his mother goes to sleep and doesn't wake up.

With the heat shut off, the food disappearing, and four-year-old Saxon growing sicker by the hour, Crowley does the only thing he knows how to do: he takes care of his little sister. He finds food where he can. He burns whatever will keep them warm. He tells lies when the truth is too frightening to give her.

And outside the farmhouse, the ravens begin to gather.

As days pass and no one comes, Crowley is forced to make impossible choices no child should ever face. Meanwhile, notices are mailed, calls go unanswered, absences are recorded, and every adult assumes someone else is checking.

By the time someone finally knocks, survival has already demanded more from Crowley than anyone should have to give.
