Official History of the Canadian Forces in the Great War,1914-1919

"Official History of the Canadian Forces in the Great War, 1914-1919 : The Medical Services" is a comprehensive and authoritative account of the medical support provided to Canadian troops during the First World War. Written by Sir Andrew Macphail, this volume meticulously documents the evolution of the Canadian Army Medical Corps (CAMC) from its pre-war state through the immense challenges of the European theater. The work explores the organizational structure, the treatment of the wounded, and the administrative hurdles faced by medical professionals in the field.

The narrative covers the full spectrum of medical care, including frontline aid posts, casualty clearing stations, and base hospitals. Macphail provides insight into the logistical triumphs and tragedies of the war, detailing the management of infectious diseases, the innovation in surgical techniques, and the heroic efforts of doctors and nurses. This historical record serves as an essential resource for understanding the scale of the medical effort required to sustain the Canadian Expeditionary Force. It highlights the integration of medical science with military strategy and the enduring legacy of Canadian medical contributions to the Allied victory.
