Petroff 2...Nf6 Playbook

The Petroff Defence 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 is well respected at all levels of chess play. This basic simple repertoire gives you a plan for Black after all the major 1.e4 e5 openings. Black attacks e4 with 2...Nf6 (instead of meekly defending e5 with 2...Nc6). Black's knight is perched on e4. It proudly occupies a central square in the white territory. Many top grandmasters follow this approach as Black. This opening is also called the Russian Defence after the prominent Russian chess master A.D. Petroff during the mid-1800s.
