Build the skills the AP® World History: Modern Exam actually rewards: reading sources closely, placing them in their time, and arguing with evidence.
Practice to Mastery: AP® World History: Modern Workbook contains 920 practice questions organized by the nine units of the College Board's Course and Exam Description, from the Global Tapestry of c. 1200 to globalization in the present day. Each unit is weighted like the exam, so the units that count most get the most practice.
Every multiple-choice question belongs to a set of three or four that share a single source-a primary document, a historian's interpretation, a map, a chart, a table, or a timeline-just as on the real exam. Within each unit the sets run from Easy to Medium to Hard, and every question is tagged with its difficulty, course theme, and historical thinking skill, so you always know what you are practicing and where you need more work.
Each unit closes with a complete answer section: an answer key, a worked explanation of every multiple-choice question, and a point-by-point scoring guide for every short-answer and long-essay question. The explanations teach rather than simply tell. Each one shows why the correct answer is right-what the source says, who produced it and why, and how it connects to the larger history-so that students learn to source a document, identify a claim, trace causes and effects, and compare societies.
The free-response practice follows the published formats. Short-answer questions in every unit are built on a secondary source, a primary source, and a non-text source. Long-essay prompts emphasize comparison, causation, and continuity and change over time, with six-point scoring guides that show what a defensible thesis, real contextualization, and effective use of evidence look like.
A dedicated DBQ section offers three document-based questions, set in c. 1200-1600, c. 1600-1900, and the twentieth century. Each has seven documents, a seven-point scoring guide with examples of outside evidence, and notes on how every document can be used and sourced.
The book ends with a full-length practice examination in the shape of the real one-55 multiple-choice questions, three short-answer questions, one document-based question, and one long essay-with complete explanations, scoring guides, and a scoring page that shows how to weight each section as the real exam does.
Sources are handled with care. Secondary-source passages were written for this book. Primary sources are either authentic public-domain documents, quoted from the editions named in their source lines, or clearly labeled original period-style excerpts. Every map, chart, and timeline was drawn for this book and printed in clear black and white.
Use it alongside an AP® World History: Modern course unit by unit, as a structured review in the months before the exam, or as a complete self-study program.
For more timed practice, the companion volume, Practice to Mastery: AP® World History: Modern Practice Exams, offers twelve full-length examinations, with no question repeated from this workbook.
