"Regresar" es un relato en el que Dominique Ané sondea la relación que mantiene con su ciudad natal: Provins (región de Seine-et-Marne), donde vivió su infancia y adolescencia. En él, trata de comprender por qué ese lugar, a pesar del paso de los años, no cesa de perseguirlo a la vez que le enfrenta a un doble sentimiento: atracción y repulsión hacia la ciudad amurallada ù«absorta en su pasado», «cercada por campos de remolachas»ù que rezuma aburrimiento y una sensación de fin del mundo. Tal como escribe Dominique Ané, «la llanura aflige y aisla», pero quizá resida ahí el origen de la melancolía que otorga el estilo tan particular a sus canciones y a su universo musical. El relato, una sucesión de sensaciones, retratos, imágenes y hechos que marcaron al niño y al adolescente, revelan la difícil integración de una familia comunista procedente de las montañas de la región del Ariège y la experiencia de un hijo único enfrentado a su fragilidad y a la singularidad de su propio mundo. A través del aprendizaje del canto, de la voz y de la música, el adolescente encontrará su lugar para existir finalmente alejado de sus temores. "Regresar" es un viaje melancólico que se emprende hacia atrás; es auscultar, más de veinte años después, los lugares, el reencuentro con la gente, los sentimientos experimentados y una ciudad a la que el músico dedicó dos canciones: «Rue des marais» y «Les terres brunes». Para desenredar el hilo era necesario un verdadero retorno a Provins.
