Els deu contes aplegats en aquest llibret van ser escrits tots per encàrrec, una forma d'escriptura que m'agrada perquè fa bo allò que deia, si no vaig errat, Dashiell Hammett: «En el meu cas, la inspiració es diu data de lliurament». Algunes d'aquestes peces van ser publicades en dates ja ben remotes;d'altres són més recents. En quasi tots els casos, no m'ha semblat correcte tornar-les a donar aquí tal com varen sortir en el seu moment, de manera que han estat revisades, i alguna, reescrita. N'hi havia més, però he trobat que aquestes deu, posades en l'ordre en què apareixen aquí, tenien no cap unitat -això hauria estat impossible-, però sí certa coherència. El resultat m'il·lusiona perquè, per a la majoria de lectors que tingui, serà un llibre nou.
