Sartor Resartus on Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in History

"Sartor Resartus on Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History" brings together two of Thomas Carlyle's most influential and provocative works, offering a deep dive into the nineteenth-century intellectual landscape. "Sartor Resartus", or "The Tailor Retailored," is a genre-defying masterpiece that blends fiction, biography, and philosophy. It introduces the "Philosophy of Clothes," a metaphysical framework suggesting that human institutions and beliefs are but external garments for an underlying spiritual reality. Through the eccentric character of Diogenes Teufelsdröckh, Carlyle explores themes of spiritual rebirth and the search for meaning in an increasingly industrial world.

Complementing this is "On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History", a series of lectures that outlines Carlyle's famous "Great Man" theory. Carlyle argues that history is shaped by the actions and spirits of unique individuals-from prophets and poets to kings and revolutionaries. By examining figures such as Dante, Shakespeare, and Napoleon, he explores the nature of leadership and the moral imperative of sincerity. Together, these works represent a powerful critique of materialism and a call for a more profound, heroic engagement with existence, making this volume essential for readers of Victorian literature, philosophy, and history.
