Probablement le plus connu des prêcheurs de la Renaissance, Savonarole, en italien Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498), frère dominicain de son état, prédicateur et réformateur, mort exécuté, fut un homme d'une grande complexité malgré son apparent manichéisme. Il fallait tout le talent du duo Fournel-Zancarini pour donner des éléments de compréhension neufs et percutants sur cet homme qui, de 1494 à 1498, a dirigé un régime théocratique à Florence. Prêchant de façon véhémente contre la corruption morale du clergé catholique, sans remettre en cause le dogme, particulièrement connu pour son « bûcher des vanités » dans lequel ont disparu de nombreux livres et oeuvres d'art, la dimension apocalyptique du temps est, par exemple, un élément original pour comprendre Savonarole. C'est enfin un monde exceptionnellement riche, celui de la Toscane, et de la Florence des Médicis en particulier, que restituent les deux auteurs.
