What does hunger feel like?
A rumbling tummy. An empty feeling. Slowing down in the middle of play. Hunger does not feel exactly the same for every child, but learning to notice these signals is an important part of understanding the body.
In Sometimes My Body Gets Hungry, a young girl is busy building a cardboard rocket. Her hands move, her brain thinks, and her whole body is busy creating. Then her tummy rumbles. She feels empty and begins to slow down. Instead of ignoring the feeling, she pauses and listens. Her body is telling her that it is time to eat.
Crunch, munch, chew! As she eats, she learns that food helps her body make energy and grow. Energy helps her move, think, and return to the project she loves. She also notices that her hungry feeling changes as she eats. Her tummy begins to feel comfortable, and she recognizes that her body has enough for now. Soon she is ready to tape, color, think, create, and finish her rocket.
Written for children ages 3-6, this gentle picture book uses simple language, repetition, and warm illustrations to make hunger easier for young children to understand. Its reassuring, nonjudgmental approach encourages children to notice and trust their bodies without pressure, rigid food rules, or labeling foods as good or bad.
Sometimes My Body Gets Hungry can help parents, caregivers, teachers, and health educators begin age-appropriate conversations about hunger, comfortable fullness, food, energy, growth, and body awareness. It is well suited for family reading, preschool and kindergarten classrooms, childcare programs, and early childhood health education.
The book also includes guidance for grown-ups on helping children notice how hunger feels for them and allowing children room to recognize when they are hungry and when they have had enough.
Part of the Little Bodies Library, a series created to help young children notice, understand, and respond to the everyday signals their bodies send.
