At its core, the soroban utilizes the base-10 numbering system that we're already familiar with, making it easy to understand. One key rule of the soroban is the use of beads to represent different values. The 'heaven' bead, situated above the horizontal bar, represents five units, while each of the 'earth' beads below the bar represents one unit. This division into ones and fives closely mirrors how we naturally count and makes addition and subtraction straightforward. Another significant rule is the placement of digits. Each vertical rod on the soroban represents a different place value, starting from the rightmost rod for units, then moving left for tens, hundreds, and so on. This clear visual layout makes it easy to grasp concepts like carrying and borrowing in multi-digit arithmetic.
