I did not set out to write a book of anger. I set out to answer a simple question: why does the most fertile continent on earth import the food it once exported in abundance? The story of African hunger has been narrated as weather-an unfortunate climatic accident. I reject that narration. Every historical claim in these pages is anchored to a traceable source, gathered in full in the references.
I have written this book in the first person because grief and advocacy do not belong in the passive voice.
This book is a continuous indictment, moving from the first colonial ordinances of the 1890s to the philanthropic technocracy of the twenty-first century-chapters in one technocratic project to reorganize African land and labour to serve capital that is not African. My task is to make the theft undeniable and the alternative unavoidable.
