Č uscita dalle corti e, accompagnando tutte le trasformazioni sociali di questi trecento anni, ha interessato un numero sempre maggiore di persone fino a diventare un fenomeno di massa, In questo lungo percorso si č data un'organizzazione professionale, produttiva e commerciale, anch'essa cresciuta e modificatasi nel corso del tempo: dalle marchandes de modes all'haute couture, fino alla confezione industriale. Contrariamente a quanto avveniva in precedenza, la moda moderna ha attribuito un ruolo preminente all'aspetto creativo. I couturier delle maison parigine e gli stilisti sono spesso stati gli interpreti del nuovo. Alcuni dei loro nomi sono indissolubilmente legati ai piů importanti cambiamenti culturali e di stile di vita che si sono verificati dalla metŕ dell'Ottocento a oggi. A lungo essi sono stati i punti di riferimento fondamentali per l'intera industria della moda, ma soprattutto per il pubblico che si serviva nei loro atelier, che acquistava nelle loro boutique o che guardava i loro modelli sulle riviste per scegliere il guardaroba per la nuova stagione. La moda moderna č nata a Parigi e lě č rimasta per piů di due secoli, ma nel corso del Novecento altri centri hanno saputo interpretare meglio o in modo piů tempestivo i mutamenti in atto: New York, Firenze e Roma, Londra, Milano e poi ancora Parigi.
