Con gli “Stromati” Clemente affronta diversi temi teologici, incentrati sulla figura del perfetto cristiano. Nei primi due Libri l’autore valorizza la filosofia pagana, considerata propedeutica alla fede: se nelle intuizioni filosofiche dei Greci c’è stata come una sorta di furto del pensiero biblico – come alcuni sostenevano, – la Provvidenza, tesa alla salvezza di ogni uomo, ne ha tratto un esito molto positivo per tutti. Il terzo e quarto Libro hanno argomenti più specifici. Il terzo affronta il tema della sessualità umana e della scelta fra verginità e matrimonio: Clemente valorizza ogni aspetto della volontà del Creatore, quindi anche la finalità della differenza sessuale, opponendosi sia agli edonisti sia agli encratiti che disprezzano il corpo. Il quarto libro è dedicato alla testimonianza e al martirio, che non va ricercato, ma accolto per amore.
