After losing people she loved to suicide, Elle Fisher spent seven years grieving largely alone. When she finally went looking for the support that should have been waiting for her, she discovered how little meaningful care exists for survivors of suicide loss.

She also discovered something larger.

Before a suicide, enormous attention is placed on the person at risk. After a suicide, families are often given condolences, perhaps a pamphlet or support-group number, and the expectation that somehow they will find their own way through.

But suicide bereavement is not ordinary grief.

Research has increasingly examined the relationship between suicide loss, traumatic grief, mental health, and suicide risk among those left behind. Fisher calls what can remain afterward the suicide loop: grief that goes unanswered, trauma that settles into families, silence that isolates survivors, and vulnerability that can continue long after the funeral is over.

Suicide Survives asks a different question:

What if suicide prevention does not end when a suicide occurs?

Drawing together lived experience, research into suicide bereavement and traumatic grief, and the growing field of suicide postvention, Fisher makes the case that caring properly for those left behind is not simply what we do after prevention has failed.

It can be part of preventing what comes next.

This is not a book about "getting over" suicide loss. It offers no five stages, no timetable for healing, no promise of closure, and no demand that survivors transform tragedy into something beautiful.
