Sustained Viability

In Veyr, survival depends on one actionable account. The city endured the collapse of shared reality by teaching every office, household, and public record to converge on the version of events most useful for continued life. The system works. That is what makes its final contradiction dangerous.

Two days after contradictory death records enter viability review, senior analyst Dessa Thane receives a damaged exchange cylinder from a place Veyr publicly describes as an automated reserve depot. Inside are flood accounts that refuse to agree, a request for pressure seals, and seed culture Veyr needs for its next planting reserve. The material exchange is real. The public explanation is not.

External record envoy Eris Cael will not let Corda's failures be rewritten into proof that Veyr should own the truth. Director Hesper Arct wants the contradiction preserved carefully enough for the city to continue, even if the old official account must be replaced by a more durable one. When a leak threatens food, medicine, and public trust, Dessa must build a method that permits one temporary command without allowing that command to become a complete history.

But plural evidence is not automatically humane, and disclosure is not automatically freedom. Every account carries a source, a need, a failure, and a person who may be harmed when an institution decides what must be made actionable. To keep aid moving without turning survival into ownership, Dessa must separate the authority to act from the authority to define what happened.

Sustained Viability, the final novel in The Veyr Cycle, is a literary dystopian story about bureaucracy, exchange, material dependence, historical truth, and the terrible comfort of a system that can survive the loss of its single account.
