What if the Cuban Missile Crisis had not ended in compromise?

In October 1962, the United States and the Soviet Union came closer to nuclear war than most people understood at the time. One submarine, one misunderstood signal, or one leader unwilling to retreat might have opened a path from confrontation to catastrophe.

The Button That Was Pressed begins with documented history and then crosses into a carefully constructed counterfactual scenario. It follows the first hours of escalation, the destruction of cities, the collapse of governments, the struggle for food and authority, and the world that might have emerged after a war without winners.

The purpose is not to turn mass destruction into spectacle. It is to examine how fear, prestige, incomplete information, rigid military plans, and the obligation to respond can create a chain of decisions that no leader can control. From Sarajevo in 1914 to Cuba in 1962-and to the nuclear threats surrounding wars today-the central danger remains the same: folly in power can acquire a momentum of its own.
