The Day the Unbeatable Were Beaten

For more than a century, Ireland faced New Zealand with the same ambition and the same unanswered question: could the All Blacks ever be beaten by an Irish national team?

From the earliest encounters at Lansdowne Road to the narrow escapes, crushing defeats and unforgettable performances that shaped generations of rugby history, the rivalry became a powerful measure of Ireland's progress. Munster's celebrated triumph in 1978 offered proof that New Zealand could be overcome, but the national breakthrough remained elusive until an extraordinary afternoon in Chicago in 2016 finally ended 111 years of waiting.

The Day the Unbeatable Were Beaten traces the remarkable transformation of this sporting relationship, exploring the players, coaches, tactical innovations and defining encounters that changed Irish rugby. From the heartbreak of Dublin in 2013 to the historic home victory of 2018, the unprecedented series triumph in New Zealand in 2022 and the dramatic World Cup quarter-final in Paris in 2023, Gigi Romano examines how an apparently impossible ambition became an expectation.

Drawing on more than a century of competition and following the rivalry into a new generation, this compelling history explores much more than victories and defeats. It reveals how preparation, national identity, professional development and changing belief transformed one of international rugby's most fascinating sporting relationships.
