Most people meet hyperbaric oxygen therapy late and a little confused, hearing about a chamber from a friend, a doctor, or a search result, with no clear way to tell serious medicine from wellness marketing.

Hyperbaric medicine has a short list of well-established uses and a much wider territory of questions, around brain injury, surgery, long illness, inflammation, and everyday recovery, where the research is still forming and patients are mostly left to sort it out alone. That wider territory is The Gap in Recovery: the distance between being medically stable and feeling fully restored, where a wound has closed but the body still does not feel like its own, and the scans read clean while the person living inside them knows something is off.

Roberto A. Ramirez has stood on nearly every side of the chamber, as a U.S. Navy Diver, as a patient who survived decompression sickness under pressure himself, and now as an operator in civilian hyperbaric care. He walks through what oxygen under pressure actually does inside the body, where the evidence is settled, where it is still forming, and where the claims run ahead of what anyone can prove. He is clear about what the chamber can do and what it cannot, and he leaves the reader with the questions worth asking before booking a single session.

For patients, families, and the clinicians who treat them, this is a grounded, honest map of a therapy oversold by some, dismissed by others, and understood plainly by far too few.

For education and advocacy. Not medical advice.

About the Author

Roberto A. Ramirez is a former U.S. Navy Diver who served with SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 2, one of the Navy's most specialized diving commands, and at the SRF-JRMC dive locker in Yokosuka, Japan, where he worked alongside Japanese divers in a multinational team repairing and maintaining Navy ships. Between his military service and a diving career that began with his first scuba dive in 2012, he has operated inside nearly every kind of hyperbaric chamber in existence, from small monoplace units to large multiplace systems. He now works in civilian hyperbaric care, treating patients through complex or incomplete recovery. He is pursuing a Master of Business Administration at the University of Southern California, with the aim of building the structure, transparency, and standards the wellness side of the hyperbaric field still lacks.
