Two hundred euros. A handwritten note. Seven words that change a life: "For what you are. Not for what you do."
The Importance of the Tip - The Tab Is Open
What is a tip, really? A social obligation, as in the United States? An insult, as in Japan? A free gesture, as in Italy? Or something far deeper - an act of recognition, of restitution, of presence?
Tommaso is thirty-two years old, grew up in Foggia in southern Italy, and works as a waiter in a café in Poggibonsi, Tuscany. One November evening an elderly man sits down at table number four, orders a coffee and a slice of cake, and before disappearing leaves two hundred euros and a handwritten note: For what you are. Not for what you do.
That sentence changes everything. Tommaso begins searching for that man - not to return the money, but to understand. He discovers that his name was Alberto Ferretti, that he had recently died, and that at his funeral a crowd of strangers had gathered: each with a story, each touched by a gesture impossible to forget.
Tommaso's journey takes him across Italy and Europe - Siena, Naples, Florence, Milan, Paris, Amsterdam, Oslo, Barcelona, London - and in every city he discovers a new face of the tip: the economic and the invisible, the professional recognition and the act of rescue, the one measured not in money but in attention, in time, in a word spoken at the right moment. Like the one a Jamaican lawyer named Tom gave back, along with five thousand dollars, at Kingston airport saying: If this ever happened to my children, I hope they find someone like us.
The Importance of the Tip is a documentary novel about invisible humanity - about the everyday loneliness of those who go unseen, and the extraordinary power of those who stop, look, and leave something behind. Not always money. Sometimes a sentence. Sometimes simply presence.
