After the sudden death of her father, Sarah Hurworth and her family move into an old house on the outskirts of Middlesbrough, hoping for a fresh start and a quiet summer together. But strange things begin almost immediately. Cold drafts creep through locked rooms. Chains drag across the floorboards in the dead of night. And painted upon Sarah's bedroom door is the image of a tall man in a dark suit and bowler hat - smiling with crooked, inhuman delight.

When the family visit the nearby Paper Tiger Circus, hidden beyond Fairbank Forest in the Cleveland Hills, Sarah becomes convinced the sinister figure is somehow connected to the travelling show and its dark past. As terrifying visions grow more violent and the line between reality and nightmare begins to blur, Sarah and her siblings uncover a series of disturbing events linked to the mysterious Gosforth bloodline, occult rumours, and the long-dead ringmaster.
But some things do not stay buried.
