In the walls of a human house, a mouse colony survives by rules: stay in the seams, move before full light, read dust like scripture, and never trust the open floor.

Rill is a scout trained to notice what others ignore. When a forager named Venn vanishes on a routine pantry run, Rill goes to read the lane and finds the first wrong detail: a clean strip rubbed bare through dust, wide and straight, like something heavy has been traveling the same route on purpose.

Then he sees the eyes under the cabinet. Pale. Still. Patient.

What follows is not a single kill, it is a pattern. Bodies disappear from inside the wall. Trails are erased. The colony's safest seam becomes a throat, and the predator learns their habits faster than they can change them. The elders have a name for this kind of hunter, the one that does not rush, the one that lets you feel safe until your routine becomes a leash.

As fear spreads, the colony fractures. Some want to blame rivals. Some want a traitor to punish. Mara, the leader who has kept them alive through traps and winters, tries to turn panic into procedure: close routes, post watchers, break scent lines, and keep pups away from the edges. But hunger does not stop because the walls are afraid.
