Alien abduction occupies one of the strangest territories in modern culture because it sits directly on the border between experiences that can feel completely real and evidence that remains extraordinarily difficult to verify. Thousands of people have reported encounters they sincerely believe involved nonhuman beings. Some accounts are remarkably detailed. Others contain recurring themes such as bedroom visitations, paralysis, bright lights, examinations, missing time, and beings with large eyes. Similarities between stories are intriguing, but similarity is not proof. Human brains are exceptionally good at producing consistent experiences under similar biological conditions, which is why millions of unrelated people can dream about falling without there being an international conspiracy among staircases.
The purpose of this book is not to ridicule people who report abduction experiences. An experience can be sincere, terrifying, life-changing, and still have an explanation different from the one initially assigned to it. Science has learned this lesson repeatedly. A person experiencing sleep paralysis may genuinely perceive a figure standing beside the bed. Someone awakening during rapid-eye-movement sleep may temporarily be unable to move while dream imagery continues to intrude into waking consciousness. Memory can change when recalled repeatedly. Suggestive questioning can unintentionally add details. Hypnosis can produce extraordinary confidence in events that never occurred. Neurological events, medications, stress, cultural expectations, unusual astronomical observations, aircraft lights, and ordinary human misperception can all contribute pieces to experiences that later become interpreted as encounters with extraterrestrials. The human mind is magnificent, but it does occasionally misfile things.
